I want to thank everyone for their concern regarding the circumstances of my "resignation" --  in fact the email I sent our Seneschal, Their Excellencies, and the Foresters and our Group Marshal in Training asked that I be considered "on leave."  I have not resigned!  I took an Oath to the Populace at wassail 2012 and I have not asked to be released from it.  There are no dire circumstances prompting me to be considered "on leave," only the recognition that I need to begin the stepping-back process as GM and letting others, namely Lady Agnoletta, our Group Marshal in Training, come forward.

I am deeply embarrassed and sincerely apologize for any confusion.

Second, and most important, I'd like to address the nature of archery in Cynnabar.  Forester Dillon's range has always been, by his intent, "neutral ground" and his practices open to anyone who wishes to attend them.  His range is not specifically "Cynnabar territory" except that the presence of a "lawfully" warranted Baronial GM provides that *for the archers of the Barony.*  

>From Dillon's opening of his range until March 2012, Mistress Giovanna circulated the weekly announcements of open practice at Dillon's range and suggested that people interested in archery should go practice.  It was her hope that a contingent of Cynnabar archers would thus form.  (This from emails available in the Baronial email archive.)  Obviously, Mistress Giovanna was not the Group Marshal.  She was simply making known that there was archery practice available to the Populace.

Forester Dillon's range will continue to be open to all and any who wish to practice, including anyone from Cynnabar.  He does not assume a Baronial identification as does Master Nigel's range at Hawkland Moor, also privately owned and the site of the Northwoods Baronial Archery Championship (yearly at Smurf Shoot).  ALL are welcome, from any branch, and we do have several out-of-towners practice on Sundays.

 

Third, and this is just my opinion:  many groups have Captains or Champions of Archery which is a station unrelated to being a Group Marshal.  Group Marshals are warranted: they inspect tackle, submit reports, and so forth.  (At Pennsic it was assumed that Aeffe and I would be in charge of inspecting all the Baronial archers' equipment, an assumption we did not know about until it was explained to us by the then-Kingdom AG at the time, Mistress Roewynne.)  Champions embody the militia leadership of the archery company.  Nothing says that the two can't be one and the same!  But obviously, a branch might be too small to have its own range or GM, but still have a champion to gather the community of the branch's archers around him or her.

And in all honesty, if I, as GM (and hope to be until Closing of the Range, despite my leave-of-absence) had to identify ONE archer in Cynnabar to be Champion, it would be Lord Eachann de Barde, who won outright the Tapping of the Keg competition two years' running at Ale to the Victors, and whose courage in the face of a nearly-mortal stroke only resulted in a transition from hand-bow to cross-bow with no diminution of accuracy and achievement.  

THAT is the Spirit of Chivalry embodied in an archer.

Archers and Arbalestiers of the Populace!


Archery practice for the season at the Barony of Cynnabar will
take at the range of Forester Dillon ap Dillon.



Practices will be held every Sunday thru October from 2-4 pm *weather
permitting* or unless otherwise announced (please check the website
for known cancellations).




Some loaner gear will be available on site but please bring your own
gear if you have it. These practices are considered official SCA
events so be ready to
show a Blue Card or sign a Waiver.  Gear inspections will be conducted
to ensure the safety of everyone on the line.

Please note, there are no "facilities" available at the range.


Range Rule:  **Minors must be accompanied by a parent.**  No
exceptions, per the range owner.

 May 27. Starting your shoe project - we will discuss different medieval
shoes, make mock ups, and fit a pattern for you foot.


 June 3. Hoods galore - making hood patterns for different periods. Feel
free to bring your own fabric and go home with your hood all cut out. We
will make patterns and discuss fabric choices, trim and edgings.


 June 10. Pouches for all - what kind of pouch would your persona wear? And
how would you make it and in what material? Discussion of belts and pouches
and drafting pattern pieces for the most common types. Bring your own
fabric and go home with a pouch, or at least the pieces cut out and ready
to assemble.


 June 17. Under wear - we all need them! Simple chemises and fluffy
breeches. How to size an under dress, seam treatments and fabric choices.
If time and space permits, measurements and pattern drafting will be part
of the workshop.


 June 24. Gores and gussets - How did they do it? Discussion of the
Geenland finds and how they added in the gores in their kirtles, and pain
free ways of sewing in the gussets with or without sewing machines.


 July 1. Socks - what did they use for socks? Sewn socks, needle bound
socks, hose, knitted socks, when did who wear what?


 July 8. Needle binding basics ? Several basic stitches and how to shape a
garment. How to choose the material and stitch depending on what you want
to make, and how to care for you needlebound and knitted wool garments.


 July 15. Beginning calligraphy - how to plan a scroll, what to remember,
and what to do in case of accidents and how to avoid the most common ones.
Discussion and demonstration of period techniques and modern equivalents.


July 22. Tablet weaving - ribbon for trim, ribbons for rope and something
to hold your pants up! A technique that has been used from everything from
horse bridles to hair ribbons. Come and learn the basics

Melee practice starts next week! Specifically Wednesday May 14th. We will
be at our usual spot at Washtenaw Community College in the "bowl" (see map
link below). We will start at 7 pm and go until 9, or dark which ever is

Spring Revel Event (April 27th, 2014) - Awesome! New armored and rapier
champions were chosen. Awards were given in court. Everyone had a good time.

 

Sir Straum went to a Tuchux event that he enjoyed.

 

It Takes a Child to Raze a Village - Awesome. Great day. Lots to do. Classes
were great. About 150 people showed up. Lots of good court and regional A&S.
Alexander can go to Kingdom A&S now. Genoveva is now Pentamere champion.

 

Upcoming Baronial Events and Demos

 

Penguicon Fencing Demo (May 4th) - No update. Should be set.

 

St. Cecilia (May 9th-10th, 2014) - Should be all set. Concert Friday night
at 8:PM (garb please). Program I set.

 

Saline Celtic Festival (July 11th and 12th) - No new news

 

Grand Day of Tournament (Nov. 15th, 2014) - We have contract to sign.

 

 

Old Business

 

Baronial Transition/polling required costs (up to $100) - This proposal is
for spending up to $100 for the Barony's responsibility for printing/mailing
costs during the Baronial Transition (polling) process. This is the 3rd of
our 3 meeting discussion/approval process. No new questions or concerns.
APPROVED!

 

Chronicler's Office Supplies for holding back issues of Citadel (up to $50)
- This proposal is for spending up to $50 for the Chronicler's Office.  The
binders that hold the back issues of the Citadel are falling apart.
Likewise, most of the plastic page protectors are torn.  Would like to make
sure the physical copies are in new binders and page protectors to ensure
their longevity.  For this reason requesting up to $50.00 in funds to buy
four new three ring binders and up to 150 page protectors.  

 The 2" Heavy Duty 3-Ring binders cost $7.49 a piece and the 25 pack of
heavy duty page protectors are $2.99.  This is the 3rd of our 3 meeting
discussion/approval process. No new questions or concerns. APPROVED!

 

Lunch and Dinner Taverns for St. Cecilia event. The proposal is for a $400
request for purchasing food and goods for doing both the lunch and dinner
taverns. Break even for both lunch and dinner would be 33 people (for each).
Making lunch and dinner for 50 servings. Pricing would be $5 lunch and $7
dinner. With cost of the site fee, it would make an even $20 for site fee,
lunch and dinner combined. Proposed menu was provide at the meeting. This is
the 3rd discussion of our 3 meeting discussion/approval process. 

No new questions or concerns. APPROVED!

Fencing Marshal (William) - no report

MoAS (Arin) - Successful A&S report. Workshops continue. New person in
Barony that has a glass studio. In talks with them.

Mo Youth (Ceara) - We have kids and no you can't have any. There were 2 days
of kids stuff last weekend. Bubbles = good fun. She is submitting her resume
for regional, so if you are interested in replacing her as Baronial MoY,
please let her know.

Chatelaine (Genoveva) - Several newcomers, 4 people. Another newcomers
workshop the end of May-ish. More gold key has been donated.

 

Chronicler (Ermenrich) - Going well. June 8th for next Citadel. Submit by
June 1st for any topic (no theme) but is should be SCA related at least.

 

Herald (Johannes) - Helped with part of court at ITMCTRAV and at Spring
Revel. Herald's night next week.

I will be posting this in multiple locations; please forgive me if you get
it more than once!

I was asked at Spring Revel before I was made Rapier champion how I would
handle cross over fighters. The war season is quickly coming up on the
barony, and unfortunately because we are getting ready to move I won't be
able to make many practices between now and Border Wars, but I want to
encourage any one who is considering to become a cross over fighter/fencer.
I know that the fencers will be more than willing to help any armored
fighter who is interested in crossing over to get ready to authorize, and
I'm sure that the armored fighters will be willing to do the same for any
rapier fighter considering picking up armored as well.\

And rapier fighters--remember that in addition to the standard sword and
board authorization, fencers also have the option of authorizing directly
in spear with the sponsorship of a knight, and Cynnabar has a number of
knights we can talk to about this. My hands and hip unfortunately at this
point won't let me fight spear, but I've played around with them a little
bit and they are FUN and the point control etc. is similar to what we do on
the rapier side.


I am less familiar with how rapier fighters can contribute to the armored
side, but I know from past experiences that having armored fighters on our
side make a HUGE difference in the war effort. I can not emphasize enough
how much they have contributed to our ability to secure war points at
Pennsic in particular. I remember one battle in particular where we swept
our opponents for war points and they released the cross over fighters so
that they could rest before the armored battles that afternoon, and then we
fenced another couple of scenarios just for fun, and they ran right over
us! We had not only lost a significant portion of our troops, but armored
fighters tend to have a lot more experience with melee (especially larger
melees) and that experience really makes a difference on the field.

My original intention was to publish a Citadel in early June.  Now that a
timeline has been established with the Baronial changeover, I am changing
the schedule.

The next Citadel will be published June 24.  This is one day after Letters
of Intent are due to Finn.  The purpose behind the change is to allow
candidates a chance to send me any information they would like published.

As always, anyone is welcome to send material (pictures, musings, event
reports, articles, etc.) into the Citadel to be published.  I encourage
candidates to send a picture and a brief description of their intent to
run.  Any announcement sent to me will be kept confidential until the
Citadel is published, so if a candidate sends me a photo and statement
tomorrow, I would not disclose that candidacy until the Citadel is
published.  This gives the candidates time to get a picture and statement
in before they decide to announce their intent.

In order to meet the June 24 deadline, I ask that all materials be turned
into me no later than June 16.

The Letter of Intent one must submit to be considered a candidate for the position of Baron/Baroness of Cynnabar is different than the letter of intent noted below.

 

To be considered a candidate for the position of Baron/Baroness of Cynnabar, a Letter of Intent that must include several items of personal information (full list/post be sent out this week) and must be sent/delivered to the Seneschal (me). Included in this Letter of Intent can be a write-up of anything that a candidate may feel they want to tell to send in with their Letter of Intent (but not required). These Letters of Intent will end up at Crown.

 

The letter of intent for the Citadel should NOT contain any personal information. And any submission to the Citadel is NOT considered an official submission. But writing up a letter to be published in the Citadel about yourself(s) would be good for the people of the Barony to see/read. 

 

So, officially Letter of Intent ? send to Finn. Nice write up about yourself for the Barony to read ? send to Ermenrich.

I bring news and information on the upcoming schedule for the Baronial
Transition process. As I have noted before, I want to keep everything as
clear and transparent as possible. To that end, I have an update to the
schedule of activities. 

 

Letters of Intent

For those wishing to submit their name(s) to be considered for the next
Baron/Baroness of Cynnabar, you must send me (the seneschal) your Letters of
Intent (full details to be in separate e-mail). There will be a 30 day
period where letters will be accepted.

May 24th - Start of Letters of Intent acceptance

June 23rd - End of Letters of Intent acceptance

 

Candidate Q&A sessions. 

This is where the people of the Barony can sit down and ask questions
directly to the candidates. We are offering 3 opportunities for people to
show up and participate. 

June 23rd - Q&A Session 1 (this will be in place of the normal business
meeting 7:PM - 9:PM) AT THE SALINE PUBLIC LIBRARY

TBD - Q&A Session 2  the original date we were looking at was not available
at the Saline Public Library, second session still TBD

July 20th - Q&A Session 3 (after at Sunday practice starting about 4:PM)

 

So there you have the upcoming schedule. Please let me know if there are any
questions at this point.

It is that time of year again... time to start thinking about and making
preparations for Pennsic.  This year, Pennsic runs from July 25- August 10,
2014

*.*We on the Cynnabar camp staff would like to encourage everyone who plans
to go to Pennsic this year to *pre-register*.  Cynnabar gets allotted our
land based on pre-registrations.  To make sure we have enough land for
everyone's tent (plus land for paths between tents etc.) *we really need
everyone to pre-reg*.

When you pre-reg, make sure you specify in the group name *CYNNABAR*.
*Pre-registration
on-line ends Jun 16th (on-line, paid).*

?Archers and Arbalestiers of Cynnabar!

WHAT BETTER WEATHER could you hope for?

Mostly sunny and 82 this coming Sunday, June 1!

The archery range will be OPEN for practice at the usual time, 2-4pm, at
Forester Dillon's.  It will be sunny -- bring sunblock and drink plenty of
fluids!

Please note!  A family responsibility will cause me to miss practice this
Sunday but Forester Dillon will of course be present.  I encourage all
other attending Foresters and Marshals & MiTs to lend a hand, please, with
shade flies, field quivers, and managing the Line, etc.  And finishing THE
POPSICLES!

Also:  We don't have an "official" Thrown Weapons practice in Cynnabar
(yet!) but it has come to my attention that such activities do occasionally
occur adjacent to Forester Dillon's archery range ...  And they might even
this Sunday!  :)  Jus' sayin.

We are in need of a new Group Knight Marshal. Our own Baron Jason needs to
step down and is targeting Pennsic.
