A gift of baronial baldrics we can make for them to help them out establishing their identity seems appropriate. A test of this plan will take place on April 19. This will be an Extra Special Meeting, because it will include discussion of why the group may wish to leave the Classic Cup Caf?. The usual Monday Meeting will be held on April 20. WHY hold a meeting on one Sunday a month? I think we will see different people participating. Some people cannot make the Monday night meetings. It may be more difficult for student members to get out to the west side of town; both the Union and Island Lake Park are close to campus. Our turnout on Mondays is small unless some notable piece of business is on the agenda. More and different people would be in the meeting mix if we have this second time and place. Making it easy for people to get to meetings will build community and might produce a more diverse and representative body of opinion on the business of the Barony. It might increase the sense that there are options to make one's voice heard in Cynnabar. HOW will this sort of meeting work? * I do not know. *That is an important thing to discuss. Would we Intersperse Business and Feats of Arms? Hold the fun business like Event Reports before the combatants are done, and do Serious Business after practices end? What about those at Practices who do not want to attend the meeting? These are some of the ideas we need to discuss. *WHAT time would this be?* It will be after 3 pm, as that is when Kay can get from work to a meeting. WHERE will this happen? *Location will be tied to the site of fighting practice,* which is about to make it's seasonal shift to Outdoors at Island Park off Maiden Lane. WHEN will this change happen? * If the Barony likes the idea* of holding one meeting a month at Practice the first "regular" Sunday Meeting will be the Sunday BEFORE the Third Monday in June. Not only did I really agree with the statement in the minutes - that it felt more like a demo, and I wanted it to be a revel, not a demo, as it feels like I'm on display at a demo, which I don't like unless I'm specifically in "demo mode" - but it's harder to hold a fight practice with so many people walking around. We had to be very careful whilst fighting to make sure that bystanders didn't get hit. In order to run a practice at such a busy park, we would need to have at least one marshal watching the perimeter, on top of people fighting. We just don't have enough fighters to do that every weekend, and it would be detrimental to Cynnabar rapier. What if we only have two fencers, or four fencers, who want to pair off and fight? We wouldn't be able to at Gallup Park as we would at Island Park. We're not going to set up a huge listfield each practice. And the benefit of fighting outside has always been the amount of space we have, so that we're not restricted into a couple tiny listfields, as we are in the Union, and as we would be at Gallup Park. At Island Park, I have the space to set up weird tournaments all over the grass, and I just don't see that happening at Gallup as easily. So, no, please don't move fight practice. It works really well at Island Park. The opportunity to talk to the public and recruit more people to our Society far out-weighs the inconvenience associated with that. Honestly, we spend most of our time at practices talking anyways, why not include potential recruits in the conversation? Additionally, if we are moving business meetings to be co-located with fight practice, there will be plenty of people around to share in the conversation/recruiting duties. While the location we were in on Sunday is perhaps not the most ideal for running 10 fights at once, or doing melee, there are other fields in the park with more open space. Thanks, -Gregoire. I loved how Gallup Park worked for us - maybe it isn't the best place for a Revel, but definitely it would work well for practice - I met a lot of great potential newcomers, and the exposure was fantastic. Much more beneficial from this standpoint than Island Park. Although I thought it was great for the Revel too - because people could see crafts, projects, talk about garb, etc. Maybe a good demo/practice space? Just a few thoughts! And, I think partially due to more general traffic, they tend to have a lot more non-fighters at the practices. That probably spreads the work out of "interacting with the public" a bit. Logistics-wise, getting someone to do constable work between bouts shouldn't be a big deal unless there were exactly two people there. Certainly if someone needs me to do crowd management for armored or fencing when I'm between bouts - grab me! People fulfilling this role are formally know as Constables in the Middle Kingdom. The rules governing their use are copied and pasted below from the MK Marshal Handbook v 12.1 -Gregoire. Constables Constables are Society members who informally help supervise the list boundaries, and who may perform other Marshal related duties at the direction of the MIC. I must say: the armored combat community has worked out a magnificent tournament, because the Tournament of Defense (modeled directly after the Tournament of Chivalry) was the most fun I've had on the rapier list in a long time. It's amazing! I sincerely hope that they continue with regularity, in exactly the same format!!! I really, really wish I could be at the business meeting being held at practice today, especially as I pushed for this to happen and have opinions about things that I would like to share. But I just got home from Unicorn, and I'm too tired to drive to practice safely (I'm thankful I made it home in one piece!). If moving fighter practice to Gallup Park is seriously being discussed, I hope this is publicized so I can make sure I can show up to be a part of the discussion. I have strong reservations about this concept, which have not been fully addressed by the follow-up comments made on the email list, and are probably better discussed in person than through slow exchanges in email form. Increase exchange of ideas among as many members as possible *Problems at the Classic Cup Caf?. *The concerns about a series of poor sanitation inspections at the Monday Meeting restaurant were reviewed. About a month ago Sir Gregoire had passed on the public records of the February 2015 inspection, which had a number of critical performance citations for not keeping food stored correctly in coolers, not marking dates of production and last allowed use, and some cleaning issues. Why do we meet at the Classic Cup Caf?? Some history of past meeting places was recounted, Corner Brewery, Borders Books, TGI Fridays. Noise levels were an issue in the other restaurants attempted. Some members objected to bars, or to alcohol being consumed during meetings. *Good things* about a Sunday Business Meeting: ? ?I came to attend the meeting today, not practice.? This suggests a meeting would bring more and different people to the Union on a Sunday. *Problems* with a Sunday Business Meeting: ? Sunday gets longer ? Often people have attended an event out of town on Saturday and Sunday are just getting back. One member emailed to regret not being able to come for that reason, too. ? The meeting cannot overlap practice or cut into that time. Practice can run till 4:00 pm if the turnout is good. Getting agreement from the fighters for this meeting is important. ? Some would rather have two events on different days rather than a long day ? But coming to an activity on 2 different days can be hard sometimes. ? ?Before Practice would be better.? That would mean a Deputy Seneschal would run that meeting, as Kay works Sundays all the time except in May. ? The practice site goes outdoors for the warm months. ?
