It's time for Nicola's Books to start coordinating the Holiday Gift Wrap
Schedule.

May I suggest that you decide as soon as you can if you are still
interested.  And when you would like to participate.

I have listed Mistress Claire as the contact person, because I needed to
submit a name right now.  Of course the group may select anyone they wish.

This year the new manager may seek more groups to wrap so the sooner you
know the times you prefer, the better. I suggest you contact her, right
after Labor Day and let her know you are interested.  And that you are in
the process of deciding on a time.

I am leaving the country on Mon, Sept 7 and will not be participating.

Please know that the staff and customers look forward to and enjoy the
presence of the Barony of Cynnabar.   Decked in your beautiful garb, you
always adds more fun and excitement to the day.   The shifts are always
covered, and you are  friendly and helpful.  And the staff changes are
seamless.  I was always very proud.

Hello Everyone

I have decided that I do not have room in my suitcases for my garb.  So I
would like to donate it to Gold Key.

The problem is that I am leaving on Monday morning.

Is it possible for someone to come and pick it up tomorrow?

I will be home in the morning, running errands in the afternoon and back in
the evening.

I will leave a small white stool on the lawn.  The garb will be in a
plastic zipped bag on top of it labeled SCA.  Just take it.

My address is 1607 E. Stadium Blvd.
1-1/2 blocks east of Packard, on the left side.  Dark brown brick house set
back off the road.

It's late asking, so if the bag is still there by nightfall I will go to
Plan B.

Cynnabar -

I've been unable to get a response on the Fall Revel event page, so I'm
going to ask the entire barony and see if something falls (hehe) out.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to hold a mini woods battle for
rapier fighters at the Closing of the Range/Fall Revel?  I don't remember
if the layout of Dillon's property would host this well or not, but I'm
really interested in seeing if it would.  I know that there is a woods
archery shoot (or has been in the past), and am wondering if we could share
those woods between rapier and archery (at different times of the revel, of
course!).

Are there any (unofficial) archery practices this month, where I might be
able to walk about and see if this is feasible and talk with archery folk
about this?

We were in our new location.  It was pretty good.  The various dinner items
some people brought in from the different restaurants in the building
smelled good.

Location:  Pierpont Commons, U of M North Campus, Boulevard Room. 2101
Bonisteel Blvd Ann Arbor, MI 48109. NC43 is the number of the free evening
parking lot closest to Pierpont Commons. *FIRST TIME!*

*Activity, Event & Demo Reports*

*Let?s include everything we are doing in the Society in these reports; not
just events and travel!*

Vikings Come Home:  Lot of archer, a very tame redtail how with falconer,
Cattle Raid Battle was a good activity.

*Festifall & NorthFest - Daye*

Northfest: Labor Day

Hot and sunny.  Not allowed tents! Not in the shade.  Great crew:  Pete,
Gabby, Eadard/ Mike, Hattie.  Needed a bigger helm for show and tell.  Wax
tablet was popular.

Gave out:         140+ QR info cards

                        20 some brochures

                        50 email requests, all U/M students



Festifall:  Thursday 9/10

Much better weather and more reasonable time slot.

Kasha and Hattie came for a quick shift, Josie was a huge help all day, and
Gavriel arrived for the afternoon with water bottles and snacks! (Godeth
stopped by to say hello).  Serious Grateful props toe Eadard/ Mike for
working with me both days, and printing up more cards.

THIS WAS CRAZY HUGE. Lines wrapped around Hatcher Library.  Some groups
performed.  We need to do a fencing/ fighting/ dancing demo. It was less
than five minutes per group, and Hattie may need to register us
differently, but I think we need to do this.  Also we noticed the big
printed/ framed posters.  That might be something else the group should
consider. (Apply to the SORC Student Organization Resource Center to find
out more. Ms Kay) ?Stone? was back to try on a properly sized helm.

you can commit please let Daye know.

Our Baron and Baroness will hold a brief court to give the flavor of an
event.  (Kay has dibs on being Seneschal)  Let them know if you can help
with that.

Provided.  Our goal is to attract students, give them a chance to meet us.

Grand Day of Tournaments staff meeting: Is this on Wednesday the 23rd or
Tuesday the 22nd?  The email I had gotten said the 23rd, but this says the
22nd.

Thank you everyone for the information!  I knew that booking rooms is a
pretty slim concept as a last-minute thing, but I was hoping that the Opera
Lounge might be available as it doesn't seem to get used much.

As it isn't on the list of reservable rooms...what do you fancy my chances
would be to hold a guerrilla class/meeting on a Sunday afternoon?

At fight practice?  I'm sure if you pass it with the group marshal of
rapier or heavy (whomever the class is for), they would accommodate you.  I
know on the rapier side we've started to have a schedule of sorts, and we'd
love more people to teach classes.  Speaking for rapier, we'd appreciate
some notice beforehand, especially because there are a couple practices a
month that we already have plans made for and it would be difficult to
squeeze an extra class in those days (plus, it's fun to advertise it ahead
of time).  Don't think you're talking about rapier classes, but I can only
speak for that community (as our group rapier marshal's assistant, I
generally know how he thinks on things, and am on the internet far more
than he is).

If you mean for non-fighters, alongside fight practice - there is a small
alcove room right across the hall from where fight practice is held indoors
(October - April, generally) that is usually not used, and that has often
been appropriated for whatever classes have been taught before.  I know
Baroness Hannah has taught several scribal classes in that area before,
alongside fight practice.

Speaking as a fighter, I always appreciate it when these things are
announced, so then I can know to watch out for them and take them if I want
to.  I was saddened to learn that there was a neat class on pattern
drafting being taught on the edges of fighter practice a few weeks ago,
that I completely missed because I was doing rapier and there wasn't an
announcement (or I missed the announcement).  It sounded like something
that I would've liked to have learned.

My work schedule just got crazy, and I can't make it tonight.

Also, 7 pm on weeknights is really a difficult time for me (I'd have to
leave by 7:30 pm to make my bedtime), as my work starts so incredibly early
in the morning for the next two months.  Can we make the meetings earlier
in the evening?

I sent an email with plans, thoughts, and concerns to Agnoletta about two
weeks ago.  I hope some of those start to get addressed tonight.  Let me
know if there's anything else you need from me at the moment.

It is with great happiness I share this news.

First an introductory anecdote: 

When Pete and I came home from our first event (which was in Wisconsin) we did some basic research and discovered we lived in The Barony of Cynnabar. At that same moment we saw they had a "movie night" SWEET! We thought to ourselves, let's check this out. They are showing Henry V. Can't go wrong there eh? We met this guy, I swear I thought he said his name was Strong... anyway..followed him around WCC for a couple minutes to discover the space was double booked and we were the only ones there so we took him back to our house and plied him with Guiness as he confirmed that this was a game we wanted to play.

NOW 18 years later I am thrilled to announce... MOVIE NIGHT IS BACK BAYBEE!!! 

If this one goes well I can see a movie night a season (so four a year). There have been lots of suggestions for upcoming movies, it will be hard for UM student Org President Hattie Knapp and I to narrow them down but working together we shall persevere. Yes, some films will be more historically accurate than Princess Bride, maybe some will be more silly.  

I hope you all can join us. Oct 3 at 7pm on campus in 1528 CC Little  

It seems like a fun tool to meet the university community.

Welcome to a Japanese persona craft day!

We are trying a new concept, instead of having weekly A&S evenings, we will
have monthly craft days.

The first one will be October the 3rd, and it will have a Japanese persona
theme. You do not have to have a Japanese persona to enjoy this day, you
just need to be curious about Japanese culture.

The preliminary schedule for the day start with a visit to the Japanese
collection at UMMA, the art museum on the U-M central campus, at 11 am.
We will set up a meeting point and hope to be able to coordinate rides and
pick up points.

After the museum we will re convene at 601 Lambkins Road, Saline, where we
will have a light lunch, with a Japanese theme. Car pooling will be
encouraged.

After lunch (around 1pm) we will start with several workshops, classes and
lectures, that will continue through the day and evening.

Classes and workshops include, but is not limited too:
Intro to Kumihimo: an 8 stranded braid
History of Kumihimo
How to construct a kosode
Heian lady's clothing
Heian literature
Court ladies in Heian Japan: Heian Gender Relationships
Heian 101
Having a Japanese Persona: How to "be" you persona
Heian Japanese poetry
Japanese calligraphy,
Japanese games,
Origami,
Furioshiki (tying of carrying cloth)

There will also be a table with books and cool things.

Please let us know if you want to come, it will help us to plan the amount
of food needed.
Garb is encouraged for the workshop part, but unfortunately we are not
allowed to show up in garb at the museum, due to safety and security issues
with costumes/bulky clothing.

If you are not involved in the purchase of the trailer for the storage of
the List Field and related items you may skip this long copy of pages from
the Kingdom Seneschal's Handbook.  Long story short: the Society's Insurer
will cover it as soon as we send in copies of the title and registration.

It will cost about $50/ year to insure our new trailer, but there is NO
cost to Cynnabar.

Japanese day update!
Classes have been booked! Materials for origami and calligraphy has been
secured, furioshiki has been prepared, and several books on Japanese
clothing, armor and houses have been lined up for a self study table.
We will meet at the Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) at quarter to 11am on
 Saturday the 3rd of October, and classes will take place in Saline. If you
do not want to visit the museum, you can join us at the club house in
Saline for the classes that will start at 1pm. Please answer this message
with a quick "yes" if you plan to attend, so that we may be able to plan
the amount of food for the lunch and snacks.

Greetings to all!

Here comes the schedule for the Japanese day, and remember, it is open for
anyone curious about Japanese culture in period.

Meet at the University of Michigan Museum of Art 10:45, at the front doors
(525 South State Street, Ann Arbor).
11:00 Museum opens, and we will be at the Japanese collection, in case you
miss us at the door. Museum has asked us kindly to not show up in garb, and
I have promised that we will be good, but please bring garb to our class
room site.

12:00- ish Leave to go to site, 601 Lambkins Rd, Saline. Look for Japanese
signage.

12:30 ish Start serving food and eat food  - Mistress Kay is going to talk
a bit about Japanese food.
Hopefully we will start and finish eating in time to start classes at 1pm,
or 1:30 at the latest, but there is some extra time, if we need it :)

If you want to bring your own snacks/lunch - Please do not bring fresh mint
or bananas to the site! One of our teachers is very allergic to bananas!!

Station 1

1p-2:30 Intro to Kumihimo. History and intro to how to do the 8 stranded
braid. Teacher: Fujiname no Kaede

2:30 - 3:30 Heian 101: Introduction to the Heian era, as it applies to all
of Japanese history. Teachers: Fujiname no Kaede and JahanAra Amat
Al-Hafeeza

3:30 - 5:00 Heian clothing. Crafting a kosode. An overview of Heian
clothing and the design of the Kosode, the basic garment that all Japanese
clothing descends from. Teacher: JahanAra Amat Al-Hafeeza

Station 2

1:30 Heian Poetry. Teacher: Sugawara

4:00 Furioshiki. The art of tying cloth, a way to carry your objects in
style. Teacher: Arina de Traentorp

Craft table/Station 3
On this table there will be origami, calligraphy, furioshiki, and a pile of
reference books available, for you to peruse. And hopefully some Japanese
games.

After classes we will have a Japanese persona round table discussion, put
together a tea ceremony and watch some slides.

There will be several sets of Japanese garb available to borrow during the
day, and we will demonstrate some of the useful obi knots and how to fold
them to store them.

by Jason, Gregoire, the Dragon Herald? the photo was quite the mob scene.

marshal-in-training.  She would just need support running ranges.  There
are a few winter archer y events, where she can continue to work with
marshals and have her qualifications signed.

?         Grey says he will step down at Fall Revel, but that as the season
has ended it is not critical that the post be filled until spring.

Shooting tunnel is a success at Wassail.  Ask Birke about conditions on

Has helped some officers get their web pages updated. Working on developing
a Searchable Cynnabar Order of Precedence.  There is not a lot to do with

This provoked discussion about future program updates, which are expected
soon, when Drupal 8 releases.  There will be options to make our site more
mobile friendly which Ermenrich and others are looking forward to.

THAT provoked discussion about the fact that our site is considered very
useful and friendly to SCA experienced visitors, but not as easy to
navigate for newcomers, who do not know our vocabulary.  Perhaps we should
add a layer, a front page that is vey newcomer focused? sort of a Front
Porch.  Then our current home page becomes the inner layer.

Fencing Marshal (William) ?

No report.  Word is that William and Birke are teaching.

   - We have a lot of kids in the Barony! Yay!
   - There will be Youth Point at Grand Day and I'm working to put together
   a few classes either taught by children or youth. There will be time set
   aside for our youth to work with the Youth Marshall as well.
   - I am still working with our Regional MoY (Lady Ceara) on Page School.
   We have met with the Kingdom level Page School Dean, Baroness Katayoun
   al-Aurvataspa and she will be helping us through this process.

Chatelaine (Daye) ?

My Web Page is done!  Movie Night is posted on the web.  I give us a B+ for
the Mass Meeting.  We had less turnout that last year, but that may have
been because many people using the Union were there for some sort of
political event, Young Republicans(?) Lots of Kudos to everyone who helped
make the event a success. [More names were named that Kay could record?]

Chronicler (Gavriil) ?

Not available, but Kay reports that tonight was deadline for submissions to
Citadel.  And the new feature for offering praise to those who impress you
got some comments from those at the meeting.  This seems like a Good Idea.

Herald (Johannes) ?

My report has been submitted today. Early!
No herald?s night in September due to the Labor Day weekend.  Next meeting
is October 5th.

Knight Marshal (Gregor) ?

Not Available.

Archery Marshal (SOON to  be Open) ?

Grey plans to step down at Closing of the Range.  If anyone is interested
in becoming a new Archery Marshal, please see your local seneschal.  It is
the Last call foe arrow making for the season.  Soon it will be too cold to
do outside and the materials are dangerous for indoor work.  Contact Grey
to order Arrows.

Seneschal (Kay) ?

It?s been quiet, except for all the event planning, and demoing, and
arts!  Grey
and Daye offered  to *run the 10/12 Meeting for Kay*.   Thanks for
supporting my trip to England.  If YOU are interested in running a meeting
as practice for a future position do let Kay know.

The same goes for any officer position you might be interested in learning
about.  Talk to me if you are not sure you want to talk to the officer
directly.

The quarterly report went in after out last officer reports but before the
deadline.  If you ever want to see a copy let me know and I can email it.

Baron and Baroness (Kasha and Ermenrich) ?

Our court at Mass Meeting allowed us o pass on Awards of Arms to 2 people,
and to give an Elephant?s Heart.  We were very happy that the Heart and one
AOA went to student members of Cynnabar; it was the perfect time.  There is
a lot going on and we will have Court at events like Fall Revel and Grand
Day.  Please get recommendations in to both Us and Their Majesties.  Also
bring us your ideas for Court Shtick, performances, anything you think we
might use to make them memorable.

IMPORTANT:  Their Majesties say they complete their Court Lists 1 month
before an event they plan to attend.  This means that you must have
recommendations in for Grand Day by Oct 6.  T

Please bring us Prizes that can be given for Grand Day.

We hope you will support Cynnabar Practices and Meetings, even at the busy
time of year.

Many thanks to Mistress Kay for her informative reporting, as usual.

I just wanted to bring up a point which I'm not sure has been realized --
did anyone else note that Terpsichore was up against Golden Seamstress on
April 9?  I was contacted early regarding judging so the date may not yet
be common knowledge, but I think it might be an issue.  And probably
unavoidable at this point.

Subject: [Cynnabar] Japanese day: Parking and Fees (there are none:)

Japanese day monetary and parking update: The museum is free, they have a
suggested donation, but I will leave it up to every person to decide what
and if, they want to contribute. We are only visiting a small section, for
a relatively short time.
The lunch is FREE.
The classes are FREE.

The parking structure is between Maynard, Thompson, Liberty and William
(2nd block west of State street), only a few blocks from the museum. We do
encourage carpooling, my car only have one seat available right now, but
feel free to use our street as a meetup point, if you want a car to follow.
And please talk to my deputy, Aeffe, she and Godaeth have offered seats in
their car too, and if more people have seats, please post on this thread to
help people to get a ride.

PenguiCon 2016: This is truly a fantastic arena to do demos or classes in.
Anything the SCA does, they do - history, arts, science, tech, martial
arts, food, dance, performance - they already have mundane versions of all
of these, and are eager to host more SCA versions.  PenguiCon 2016 is April
29 - May 1, so it's the same weekend as St. Cecelia (local event) and This
Land is Our Land (Shadowed Stars, very popular rapier event).

If anyone is interested in demoing or teaching anything at PenguiCon 2016,
I can put you in contact with the right people, or please feel free to dig
out contact info for them directly (they have an active Facebook group and
year-round monthly meetings, and a contact page on their website,
http://2016.penguicon.org/contact-staff/).

I put in a question about who to talk to about indoor archery on their
Facebook page, and will let you know when I hear back.

Greetings to all!

We now have 4+1 seat available for going from 2101 South circle drive to
the museum and back, for individual driving to the site at Saline.

I will have space for 2 going out to Saline but only space for one coming
back, unless people rearrange themselves :)

Martha has just offered a possible pick up in Ypsilanty/Walmart to museum.

Please send me a line if you would like to get one of the empty seats :)
