If you are considering putting together an event proposal for Pentemere
12th night next January you may find the attached useful.

The Society requires that event budgets must be submitted in writing and
approved by the group. A proposal to create an event or to be steward of
an  event is required to include certain items. Others help to increase the
likelihood that the Society Chapter (or its decision making body) will
support the proposal.

The Middle Kingdom does not have a template to guide potential stewards.
With the help of some experienced stewards here in Cynnabar, several
examples from branches all over the Society, and the relevant Society and
Kingdom rules I have put together a form that you may find helpful.

I hope we hear from *at least* 2 teams of potential stewards for 12th Night
at the baronial meeting on Monday March 14, the due date their Excellencies
have set for proposals. All proposals will be heard and considered with
interest. This is another great chance to show our Region and our Kingdom
what Cynnabar can do.

I have just enough people signed up to bring desserts to Terpsichore on Saturday to be okay, I think, but I'd really love to have more. If you can bring a dessert, please do so, even if you aren't signed up.
Also a reminder! Bring a serving utensil if you dish requires one, and remember to take it and your serving plate/pan/whatever when you leave, or make arrangements for someone else to do so. I have no way of knowing what you brought, and what someone grabbed from the church kitchen, so it might get left behind otherwise.

Once again this year I am organizing the dessert revel for our dance event, Terpsichore at the Tower. The event will be on Saturday, March 5th this year, and the dessert revel will take place between sets of the evening ball.

Traditionally, Cynnabar folks (and occasionally a few others) bring desserts for the revel, which are then enjoyed by everyone attending.

Please let me know ASAP whether you can bring something for the revel, even if you're not yet sure what you'll bring.

I would like to encourage everyone in the Barony who possibly can do so to contribute something. I will once again be doing a subtletie style cake myself. The revel at our event has become known for it's variety and abundance of food (I've been told by other dancers that Terp has the BEST dessert revel), and I'd like to keep that up. We had one year where I nagged less than usual, and we ended up being a bit on the skimpy side food-wise, so I'd like to keep that from happening again.

You can email me or message me on Facebook to sign up. If you don't know what to bring, please go ahead and sign up now and decide exactly what to make or buy later. The purpose of the list is to make sure that there will be enough food, and that not everyone brings the same thing (some duplication is fine, but if everyone in the barony showed up with a bag of grapes that would be a bit silly).

We should have a table somewhere where subtleties can be on display during the day, and space in the kitchen to stash desserts that won't do well sitting in a car all day.

Some general guidelines (not rules) as to what to bring:

Try to stick to finger food, or things that can be eaten with just a fork. Lots of something small is probably better than a few of something large. This will let more people sample each thing (buffets tend to make folks want to try a little of everything).

Presentation counts. Brownies arranged on a plate look nicer than brownies still in the pan. They can also be grabbed more quickly, so the line will move faster. Nothing slows down a line like having everyone stop to cut themselves pieces of things, so precut anything where that won't destroy the presentation. If you buy something, serving it from something more period looking than the cardboard box it came in will make a better impression.

If you want to try making something that actually is period, you can talk to me, or any of the cooks in the barony for ideas. There is also a lot of great information at Stephan's Florilegium in the food sections (http://www.florilegium.org). Some examples of period choices would include marzipan (which can be shaped or molded, rolled into balls, or just cut into squares), custards, fresh or dried fruit, pastries, candied fruit peels or flowers, gingerbread, shortbread, sugar paste (gum paste), some cookies (not involving chocolate, or baking powder or soda), biscotti, sweet breads (with or without fruit), nuts or fruit tarts.

Subtleties (decorated foods, or foods which look like something other than what they are) were a medieval favorite, and would be great if anyone has any recipes or ideas along those lines which they want to try out. These can range from the ridiculous to the sublime, and generally do so in the SCA. Examples we've had have included cakes in the shapes of things (flower basket, tower, rock, lute), cookies with the cinnabar arms on them or shaped like elephants, a tower made of hostess cupcakes, and brownie battlefields of fighting marshmallow bunnies. These are often impressive and/or entertaining.

If you don't have the time, inclination, or facilities to do something period and/or elaborate, you can bring anything that you think folks will want to eat between sets of a ball. All types of cookies and candies are welcome, as are salty snacks, veggies and dip, appetizers etc.

Non-medieval food is fine, especially if it's homemade. Chocolate may not be period, but it always seems to disappear rapidly.

All of the above are guidelines, not rules. Anything you bring will likely be happily consumed by hungry dancers in need of energy. Oh, and if you bring something which has non-obvious nuts in it, you might want to mark it as such, so that folks with allergies will know what to avoid. (Putting a "Warning--contains nuts" sign next to a bowl of mixed nuts is not really necessary, although it may be amusing).

Greetings to all!

I went and visited Mott and Bailey the other day, that is a second hand and
antique and rare book store next to the Coop and Dogma, down town Ann Arbor.

He has a lot of nice reference books and he has recently acquired the
history book collection from one of the professors that passed away at the
University.

It is between 3 and 4 thousand books(!) and a lot of them is on language
history, because that was the professor's subject, but there is also a lot
of "pure" history books, a lot of translations of medieval texts, there is
etruscan, greek, a lot of latin and medieval greek language books, etc. And
much more. He has not been able to make a book list simply due to the sheer
number of books, but if you are interested in something specific, he can
check if he has it.

This staggering amount of books is kept in the stores basement, which is
open on Saturdays, the "normal" part of the store is open as usual during
the week. This is his webpage;

It might be well worth a visit. Or at least an interesting way to spend

Thank you all for a well ran and fun Terpsichore.  The event was well

Greetings to all.


The weekend has been laid to rest. I hope you all have been able to rest as
well. Terpsichore was a fantastic event this year! It ran smoother than I
could have ever hoped for. While I?d like to be able to take all the
credit, we all know that it is impossible for any one person to do such
things.


This year Terpsichore at the tower had at LEAST 70 volunteers. In order to
thank all of you individually, I?d have to have a list a mile long. It is
an honor to be the Event Steward of an event where people come from places
so far as Canada or even Texas. It is amazing to see the kindness that
people show as our volunteers did on Saturday. Whether you worked gate, set
up of any kind, tear down, taught, retained, guarded, worked in the
Kitchen, etc. please know you have my deepest thanks. These things and this
event cannot happen without your assistance and generosity.


There are a few people I wish to thank specifically though because they are
what push and gather the volunteers to make this possible. I would also
like to note that quite a few of them have never been a staff head before
and so for some this was their first time at being part of running an event.


Firstly though, Their Majesties for coming and being a part of everything
that happened at Terpsichore.
Alos, their Excellencies of Cynnabar who never stop to show their support
and help in many ways through the event.

In no particular order:

Maestra Giovanna for being my first Deputy and making sure what was going
on at all times, just in case she needed to step in.

Lord Pete for running a gate that was done smoothly and efficiently.

Master Aaron for making sure the Terp books were printed, the programs were
done, and that we had a live band to dance to in the evening!

The heads of Dance were Lord Alex and Baroness Simone who took care of
organizing the teachers for the European and Middle Eastern dance tracks
and thus made sure we had more than enough to keep us going all day!

Our lovely Terpsichore (Master Midair) for MCing the ball and being a
wonderful Terpsichore stand in!

Our lunch tavern was headed by Felix who did amazing with food that
everyone seemed extremely pleased with this year!

The wonderful dessert revel was headed by Lady Magda. All the desserts were
fantastic as always!

Set-up and Tear-down ended up being a tag team effort with Lady Daeg and
Lady Luiza. They came in and it got done! By the time clean up was
happening and I was going to check on the rooms, things were simply already
done. We had a lot of challenges this year as far as this went and it?s
important to express how this particular head staff works from the night
before until we?re all walking away from site and then some because it goes
to Daeg?s and then has to all be unloaded.

Lady Daeg also was the mastermind behind the gorgeous ball transformation
that I heard only how fantastic it made the ball! There was a lot of hard
work that went into preparing it and I think it paid off well.

The website was done by both Baroness Genoveva and Master Aaron who managed
to change the smallest detail within hours of being notified.

Every year we have Terp Books at Gate. These books are updated EVERY YEAR.
After working with them myself, it?s not really a small task either.
Mistress Alina is always on top of it and keeps us and the known world, up
to date on our dance steps!

Lady Eidy was our event?s Royalty Liaison who made sure everything ran
smoothly all day with them and that they were well taken care of!

Almost all of my staff heads had crews of their own whether they were
prepared before or had been added at the time of the event. I thank each
and every one of you for no one?s service goes unseen or unappreciated.
Thank you to all of you who volunteered and thanks for those who attended.
For without support of you, we would not have such a wonderful event.

As you may be aware, we have been successfully holding workshops in advance

Web site updates:

Order of Precedence:

- Your page in the Order of Precedence can have your device and its blazon
- see for example https://www.cynnabar.org/recipients/1

- The award list shows the device and blazon for many awards:
https://www.cynnabar.org/awards

- All the people whose armory we have are displayed at
https://www.cynnabar.org/recipients/armory (Shoshana started gathering
these a while ago, this is an updated version of that.) (Check it out on
mobile too!)

- We can now add award texts. I'll be working on adding all the ones Kasha
& Ermenrich have done so far. As an example I had handy:
https://www.cynnabar.org/awardings/3 (to see this follow the 'details' link
from the list of awards/recipients - this is maybe a little unintuitive
especially on the 'person' page so I may change this up a bit)

- We can now add preferred titles and pronouns. Again see
https://www.cynnabar.org/recipients/1 for an example.

- If you want to add award texts, add or update your heraldry, or add a
preferred title or pronouns, just send it to precedence at cynnabar.org and
we'll get it updated. SVG/vector graphics for coats of arms are the best if
you have it, but I can work with anything you have.

Other updates:

- Connections to cynnabar.org now always use HTTPS for privacy and security.

- Calendars should look better on mobile - event summaries should wrap
better now. (There's still a problem where long links in the event
description can mess up the layout, but I think I can fix that.)

- The code for the site is now on GitHub!

I would like to offer an apology for my behavior at the Cynnabar business
meeting this past Mon.

During the meeting a topic was brought up that I had disagreed with a few
weeks ago that is a concern to me. In the course of the following
conversation I did not feel that my (and others) opposition to this issue
were being heard and I lost my temper.

While I stand behind my opinion on this issues and plan to continue to
oppose it in a more well mannered way in the future. I am ashamed that I
let my emotions get the best of me and I would like to apologize to
everyone who was at the meeting and to the populace of Cynnabar as a whole
for my actions.

*How can Cynnabar be more gender aware and inclusive?* Draco is researching
and preparing a presentation on period gender identification and pronoun
variations. Plans to present it as a workshop here in June, as a dress
rehearsal for a class at Pennsic. Draco is contacting other SCA groups to
see what information she can get and they might need.

Aaron added a space on the Order of Precedence for preferred pronouns and
perhaps gender identity. This will help the Baron and Baroness and any who
write award recommendations to get titles right.

This was an idea that evoked strong feelings and opinions.  Thank you to

Greetings!

At last weeks meeting the importance of the Youth Office was stressed. Some
of you may say, "I don't want to work with kids!" Well, good news! You
don't have to!

This office is importance because it keeps our youth program alive and
families coming. It would be a shame to loose this now.

It is also important to have someone to help the barony stay up to date on
the laws and policies that come out in the Midrealm and Society.

So what are the duties of a Youth Officer? I've made up a detail list that
you can find here and on Cynnabar's website.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Youth Officer

   - Keep the Barony up to date on law and policy changes that happen
   within the Kingdom and Society.
   - Upkeep the current Baronial Youth Officer webpage
   - Provide young members with educational opportunites and engage them in
   SCA activities suitable for their ages.
      - While you can be, you do not have to be the Coordinator that works
      with youth and runs youth activities at
events/practices/meetings (It is up
      to you where and when youth activities occure by contacting the proper
      people holding the event/practice/meeting)
      - Youth point can be ran several ways as long as a few simple rules
      are covered.
         - A background checked person acts as the Youth Coordinator of the
         specific event.
         - There must be TWO unrelated adults there at all times.
      - Examples of what you can do to manage activties at events:
         - Be the Youth Coordinator and run all activities that happen in
         at youth point.
         - Be the Youth Coordinator and have two adults signed up at
         specific times to over see youth at Youth point
         - Be the Youth Coordinator and ask people to teach specific topics
         and bring a second adult with them. (This format is ran in
the way arts and
         science classes would be held for adults.)
         - Have someone else with a background check run all activities
         that happen in at youth point.
         - Have someone else with a background check have two adults signed
         up at specific times to over see youth at Youth point
         - Have someone else with a background check ask people to teach
         specific topics and bring a second adult with them. (This
format is ran in
         the way arts and science classes would be held for adults.)
      - Enlist the aid of other group officers, members, and others to
   support planned activities.

Fine Barony of Cynnabar, I Baroness Hannah challenge you! I wish you to
charge your pens and prepare your brushes as, we have a scribal challenge
upon us!

As evidenced by the great enthusiasm and participation shown at my workshop
this past Monday ? I have been moved that the group produce, at a minimum,
50 scroll blanks for Our most gracious Excellencies to gift to Their
Majesties at Their pleasure. These blanks should be completed before this
coming Pennsic XLV. With my help and that of our Baronial MOAS, Lady Aeffe,
we will be holding a "Scribal Saturday" to prepare all interested for this
wonderful endeavor.

Space has been reserved Saturday, April 9th from 10 am until 4 pm at the
Maker Works classroom in Ann Arbor. Please bring your own materials,
examples of period inspiration, and an eagerness to learn! This will be a
working session, not a lecture. Please feel free to come when you'd like.
If you plan to be there all day, we will probably place an oder for lunch,
so bring some cash if you are inclined to partake.

Title: Pre-Meeting Workshop - Good books for Cooking
Good Books for...Cooking! - Lead by Mistress Kay & Lady Daye

This month's book focus will be on medieval or other period cooking. Please  
bring a short list of your favorite cooking or other food related books,  
with a brief reason why you love them. All books, from modern fiction or  
period documentable that you find inspiring about food and cooking are  
welcome! A discussion of these books, held in Round Robin format, will be  
had to compare and exchange ideas of what makes a book valuable to you.

Book Club has been suggested to be held quarterly on the last Monday  
meeting of the month. A different topic will be chosen each time. Please  
pass along suggestions to Mistress Kay or Lady Daye as you have them.

Workshops are held in the same location as the Baronial Business meetings  
from 6:30 pm until approx 7:25 pm about an hour before the meeting begins.  
If you have a workshop you are interested in teaching or something you'd

Hello, Barony!

As you know, I am being elevated to the Order of the Laurel at the Feast of
Three Saints on April 23. I wanted to invite all of you to come to the
event and celebrate with me!

First, if you will be at Feast of Three Saints, please join my procession
into court. We aren't sure of the exact time and location of the ceremony
yet, of course, but Mistress Giovanna will be in charge and will have the
info you need that day. Everyone in the Barony is invited, and I would be
very honored and proud to have you walk in with me.

Second, if you are able, please join me and Ermenrich after court to
celebrate. We are having dinner at HuHot Mongolian Grill

Lafayette. After that, we are planning to go to Echo Karaoke
<http://www.echoktv.com/> on 206 E State Street in West Lafayette. They are
kid-friendly and have a pool lounge and private karaoke rooms, plus snacks
and drinks. I'm looking forward to trying karaoke for the first time!

I really wish I could offer to treat everyone, but unfortunately that's not
a possibility. :( However, I would love to celebrate with everyone who can
come.

European numismatic history, 476 to about 1016, with a few early medieval
coins to pass around.

*April 18 - Kumihimo Braiding with Lady Terryl*.  Try the Japanese art of
Kumohimo braiding. Learn history of the art and techniques. Class will be
hands-on, for 12 people.  Arrive on time to get your materials!

April 25 - *Trans/Intersex/Third Gender in SCA discussion lead by Draco. F*irst
half hour is a presentation of what Transgender/sexual, Intersex, and Third
Gender are, examples in medieval times, and how focusing on minorities
(racial, sexual, and gender) can improve recruitment and retention in the
SCA. Second half hour will be a discussion on the themes and ideas
presented in the first portion.

on time.  We have a new regional seneschal for Pentemere, Duchess Arabella.



Baron and Baroness (Kasha and Ermenrich) ? Fighter retreat was last
weekend. There will only be 2 melee focused events this summer.  Ermenrich
will be at both Siege of Talonvale and Battle of the Inland Seas with the
Cynnabar Militia.  Cynnabar will host regional Melee on Wednesday evening,
at Washtenaw Community College, on the southwestern open area, near the GL
building.

The Baronial Census came out today.  Please fill it out.  If you did it
last year you will soon have an email from Kasha asking if there are any
changes to your information.

Grey sold about 300 pounds of honey and there for I am looking for
