How will we be using this as a recruiting session? Revise the Financial Policy - I was of the understanding that the student group was forming a "College" and that they would become shepherds of their own destiny. The Barony giving them $250/year as a wrote matter of policy doesn't sound like independence to me, it sounds like a policy item that gives the barony free reign to meddle in the affairs of the students. I would suggest instead that the students contact us if they need funds and we can decide to support them or not as necessary. Ideally, they would be asking us at the end of every school year so that we would have time to discuss and approve the funds before any deadlines in August. -Gregoire. It sounds like the local dance group is hosting the event and has asked the UM student group (de facto: the Barony of Cynnabar) to sponsor it. The Barony has been asked to provide $300 and will be allowed to advertise at the event (flyers, etc. at the registration desk, plus our name on all posters). We have not been asked to assist with running the event in any other way, and, while it would be nice if Baronial members could attend the event in garb, our presence does not seem to be really required. In short: In return for the financial investment, we are being given an opportunity to advertise, plus possibly forming a good relationship with a local group whose interests overlap with ours. If the expense is approved, I think it makes sense for us to talk about how to advertise most effectively, given our limited role in the event. Morwen is the contact on this event. (Morwen, would you please correct me if anything I've said here is incorrect? *Revise the Financial Policy*: The $250/year that would be auto-deposited into the student group account is *not for funds for the proposed college*. This money is to be used for room reservations for Baronial practices and meetings, as well as demos that the Barony puts on at the University of Michigan. If/when the proposed college forms, *there will be two bank accounts involved*: 1) Funds for *the Proposed College* (i.e. the official SCA group functioning under the Barony, like a canton) -- this may or may not be included in the Baronial bank account, pending more information from the exchequer, etc.; 2) Funds for *the UM Student Group* (i.e., the University of Michigan student group who reserves rooms for the Barony). To be clear, the Proposed College and the UM Student Group may have exactly the same membership, but technically, they are two different groups. If, after the proposed college forms, the Barony would like to give "start-up money" to the College, we would discuss the legality/practicality/desireability of that expense separately. I do want to add that legally speaking, the UM Student Group and the College *will *be separate, since the Society has jurisdiction over the College and the University has jurisdiction over the Student Group. Also, the College can have members from the community (and from colleges and universities other than the University of Michigan), while the Student Group can only consist of UM students, since it is a UM-overseen group. *That said*, the idea of the College and/or the Student Group having less/no involvement from the Barony is a separate issue and worth discussing. As far as what will happen with the proposed College, there is nothing to make decisions about yet. The proposed College members will need to fill out paperwork and bring it to the Barony for approval, at which point the Barony and College will want to discuss how the relationship betwen the two groups will work. (Of course, we can start the discussion now, but we need to remember that it is entirely hypothetical at this point.) However, for anyone who has strong feelings about the dance event and the auto-renewal of Baronial funds for room reservations: I encourage you to come to the next meeting so that your opinion can be heard and taken into account as the Barony decides whether to approve these two expenses. The problem here is that money is being collected - we aren't sponsoring a demo in the public park, we are renting a space and a DJ and attendees will be paying an entrance fee, a portion of which comes back to the SCA, but another portion goes somewhere that isn't the SCA. So, are we co-sponsoring an event? Donating money to a charity? Helping a for-profit entity cover their up-front costs? Thanks, -Gregoire. Tim already built an SCA-legal helm and one person is coming to Gregor this week to work in his shop. *Group Marshal for Archery* (Godaeth) ? Monday 9/26/16: -- Planning is underway for Closing of the Range to be held Sunday October 30, 2016, from 1-5 p.m. Current plans are for a 3-D Tournament, Royal Rounds, Halloween friend/foe, and a Clout challenge. As an "enhanced practice" garb will be encouraged but not required and there will be snacks but no arranged potluck. -- Dillon's range is now open for the rest of the season (weather permitting) since its closure, August 7 - September 4. So far good weather has prevailed for practices 9/11, 9/18, and 9/25. -- Forester Grey attended Reign of Arrows on Sept. 10. (I assume he made a separate report in "Event and Demo Reports.") -- The Office of Group Marshal for Archery will be available to anyone who would like to take it on as of Closing of the Range. At that event I will step down as Group Marshal *permanently* having undertaken the role for three years, two consecutively, then for 2016.
