Hi Gregoire, 

To answer your question, the business about the spears came up because of a discussion about the royal encouragement for fighters of either light or heavy weapons to learn to cross over to do both at Pennsic. Spear is the way they envision light weapons fighters transitioning to heavy. So it was proposed that the barony buy a few ready made spears for such candidates to work with. It was also mentioned that these would need to be stored, and that they would only be useful at warm weather practice. Although these aspects are important factors, the rational for supporting the purchase was that we already buy loaner gear that we think we need. 

At this point I suggested that if we really want to help new fighters, why not purchase some staves of rattan that would be used as stock? Our new fighters would then purchase a cut from the stave at a rate pro-rated by the portion of the stave they wanted. Sgt. Bjarki then commented that if we were going to do that, we ought to also buy some inexpensive basket hilts and sell those at cost to the new fighter. The rational for this whole thing is that rattan and basket hilts are hard enough to come by for a newbie that it usually takes them quite a while to get these things together. If we helped make them more available, then we would get people fighting sooner. 

They would still need to deal with helms, the other really difficult thing to acquire when one is new, but we learn to walk one step at a time.

We should look to purchase items for the Barony 
spears, rattan, basket hilts 
Straum will get rattan and basket numbers together. 


May I ask for more information about this? What will the basket hilts and rattan be used for? We have two loaner swords that appear to be in good repair with functioning Baldar cuphilts. I am concerned about having loaner spears - these are difficult to transport and are not necessary for basic authorization. In my opinion authorizations beyond sword and shield should be the responsibility of the combatant looking to achieve said authorization...
