Thanks for that link. I didn't know that was available, and it makes your point very well. Maybe we can be best served by making such information more available to pass out to new members rather than fronting the purchase ourselves.

In general, I think that the take home message that we are getting at is that we, as established fighters, need to be better stewards to our new people interested in joining us on the field. We need to get them out on the field, train them and help them through the often perilous process of buying the right equipment when the time comes. I am all about this.

Regarding the staves, the problem with that "availability" is that if they want it from Icefalcon, they are waiting until Pennsic. Yeah, sometimes you can find a Midrealm merchant like Master Erik at a big event like Val Day, but that's a crap shoot. Otherwise a full stave of rattan is not a good option in the mail. And while a local member "can" offer up some extra rattan -if they have it-, that puts them in a position of needing to get more themself at some point, so it is an an occasional help, but not an overall win or guarantee. 

Regarding basket hilts, I echoed your concern that t is available to people easy enough via the mail, but others in the meeting pointed out that a newbie won't know a good one from a bad one. While I agree with that, I feel that we have enough people here to make a recommendation and they could still purchase their own basket without us having to do so. 

Bottom line, I still think the difficulty f coming up with a stave of rattan makes it worth getting that, but I agree wth you that we don't need the other stuff.

I don't think that the Barony should be in the rattan sword business. New people who are interested in acquiring rattan and a basket hilt need only search the web for any of a number of reputable merchants who will sell them both. Icefalcon comes immediately to mind. Alternatively, most established fighters that I know have a hoard of rattan sitting around somewhere that they could sell a length off of. The basket/cup hilt can again be ordered through the internet, bought used on Ebay, traded for on the Armour Archive or found at an event. 

As for the spears - I believe that it makes more sense for the barony to determine if we have any fencers who are interested in crossing over, then find them an extra spear to train with, then help them buy their own than to spend money on a number of spears which will sit around and take up space in some volunteers garage/basement/etc.

To answer your question, the business about the spears came up because of a discussion about the royal encouragement for fighters of either light or heavy weapons to learn to cross over to do both at Pennsic. Spear is the way they envision light weapons fighters transitioning to heavy. So it was proposed that the barony buy a few ready made spears for such candidates to work with. It was also mentioned that these would need to be stored, and that they would only be useful at warm weather practice. Although these aspects are important factors, the rational for supporting the purchase was that we already buy loaner gear that we think we need.

The rational for this whole thing is that rattan and basket hilts are hard enough to come by for a newbie that it usually takes them quite a while to get these things together. If we helped make them more available, then we would get people fighting sooner. 

They would still need to deal with helms, the other really difficult thing to acquire when one is new, but we learn to walk one step at a time.

Straum will get rattan and basket numbers together. 


May I ask for more information about this? What will the basket hilts and rattan be used for? We have two loaner swords that appear to be in good repair with functioning Baldar cuphilts. I am concerned about having loaner spears - these are difficult to transport and are not necessary for basic authorization. In my opinion authorizations beyond sword and shield should be the responsibility of the combatant looking to achieve said authorization...
