I really sort of think the way the game is played now is fair. We can all hope that we get the first or last card. If we are going this far then is it fair that the person who opens the last gift gets the pick from any gift out there. That means someone Still has the power to steal from any person at the end of the game with their choice of any gift that has been open. The first person gets to open 1 gift. They don't get the chance to steal unless they are stolen from so if they get, lets say 1 old shoe, and no one else ever wants to steal that from them, I don't think it is fair that they are stuck with it because they didn't get the oppertunity the rest of us got. Either way, 1 person gets "scewed". One person, one way or another, is left without repercussion. As you said, it's the luck of the draw. The way it's been played means you're lucky to be #1. The way you propose could mean you are extremely unlucky to be #1. Right now everyone hopes to be #1. It's puts a positive spin on the game. To change the rules would make it a potential disappointment to be picked as such. My vote is that we leave it the way it is. Hopefully no one will bring junk and everyone can get something worth getting. Just because you're stuck with something you didn't want doesn't mean you can't make trades afterwards with others who may not have gotten what they wanted.

We have the power to update the “rules”. I would absolutely consider removing the “first person gets last steal” component. First, if the first person gets a good gift, they may get theirs stolen and then they have a chance to steal themselves. Second, while they first person gets a chance to steal, the person they steal from is the one who gets screwed here because they have no repercussion at that point. I’d rather have no rule where first person gets to steal last. It’s luck of the draw and they do have a chance as someone can always steal from them and they have chances to steal back throughout the game. -Finn From: barony-bounces at cynnabar.org [mailto:barony-bounces at cynnabar.org] On Behalf Of Greg Less

I've not liked this arrangement, because it gives #1 ultimate power over the game. -Gregoire.On Mon, Dec 3, 2012 at 8:09 AM, Anne Stevenson <elaine242 at gmail.com> wrote:Huh, this is a really good question. When Finn first read the rules to me I had another question as well, but it has escaped the steel trap that is my memory these days. Maybe he'll remember what it was. Regarding Note 2, does this person simply trade with someone how does that work? Since at that point everyone has a gift, if s/he steals from someone then s/he ends up with two gifts and the person stolen from has nothing. How does that get worked out? Subject: [Cynnabar] Cynnabar holiday gift exchange (with rules!) Below is the setup for the traditional rules for the holiday gift exchange. It will happen in place of our regularly scheduled business meeting on Monday, Dec 17th (starting at 7:PM). Garb is highly encouraged (though not required). You may still come and watch/visit if you don’t have a gift, but you won’t be able to be part of the exchange. If you want to participate, bring a wrapped gift of around $10-ish. Note: No crap stuff from Straum’s basement/house/garage/personage.This will in the “Pollyanna” format. - All presents will be put in a pile in the middle.- People will draw numbers to see what order people go in. - A person can either pick a new present from the pile and unwrap it for everyone to see or they can “steal” a previously opened present from another person. - If a person’s present is stolen, they may either steal from another person or choose to open another gift.- Note: There is a 3 steal limit on any item. That means that it may only be stolen 3 times total for the entire event. So the 3rd person to steal an item cannot have it stolen from them again.- Note 2: The first person who goes does not get a chance to steal at the beginning, so they will have one final chance at the very end to steal.
