I too thank our chroniclers for the thankless task they do. I did that in an era not so long ago when we were not successful enough to be targets for lawsuits.

I did get out of the journalism career many years ago, but the last I heard, any photo of a public event is news and part of freedom of the press. So the local paper (if there is one) can publish a photo of us that we members can’t even put in our private club paper.

THIS is the picture that is REALLY wrong. Like other areas of American social life, our organization has suffered from the exploitation of generalized fear. We are ALL victims when people promote the idea that our government should be abolished because it’s not tough enough or that our society is not American enough or that we have to “fight” this or that.

Paranoia is a tool the despots use to keep the common people clinging to delusions of “protection” and “security” and vote them ever more restrictive laws and ever soaring “defense” budgets. They also love it when you take out more insurance because they profit twice by your fear.

Note that I’m too paranoid to single out specific despots. And I did ask everyone’s permission before sending Sword Club photos to our web person. And even the Sword Club, which has no age limits, has a waiver.

Paranoia is an easy tool to use, but a difficult one to counter. It cannot be fought. It has to be de-valued.

Therefore, for the sake not only of our newsletters but for the greater success of ours and all organizations which seek only to enrich our lives, I entreat everyone to seek more opportunities for behaviors that encourage and reinforce trusting relationships and help the world climb down.

Thank you to both Ermenrich and Richard for performing the duty of the chronicler - it's not an easy one, even when you don't have to worry about photography of minors!

Regards,

-Gregoire.

Hi all!

I am emailing the kingdom chronicler to make sure we have the official rule in place. When I hear back from her, I will post here and let you know. I ask for patience while I make sure that we are in compliance with Kingdom and Society law.

In Service,

Ermenrich

I was wondering that myself. If I as a parent sign a waiver, is that acceptable?

I understand and appreciate protecting our children, but shouldn't we avoid extremes?

Hi Richard-

After this conversation started locally, I skimmed through the Chroniclers' handbook. I saw that there is a minor model waiver form - is this no longer an acceptable way to use pictures of identifiable models?

Thanks,

-Gregoire.

<Regional Chronicler delurking from the shadows>

Believe me Good Sir, I completely understand your level of frustration. I

expect that the regulations may at some point relax to a certain degree (some

already have). That said, it is the set of regulations that chroniclers of the

SCA are presently working under at the moment. This is something we are

continually discussing amongst ourselves as chroniclers. As things are

discussed, things change, and we hope for the better. I've made a note of your

sentiments and will add them to the discussion.

If there are other opinions on the subject, please let me know (both for and

against). I can be reached at peacocda AT yahoo DOT com.
