Rapier news from Gulf Wars. Midream did real well, of special not is the
outstanding performance of Azriel and Drache who are first and foremost
citizens of Cynnabar.

Below is Don Blayde of the West’s account of rapier activities at Gulf
Wars. I chose to forward it unedited since many of us here have friends
throughout the Known World. I also chose to forward it to demonstrate
how the Middle Kingdom DOMINATED there. And also to brag about how well
Drache, Azriel and Fearghus did because not only are the three of them
from Pentamere and more specifically my region of SE Pentamere, but even
more specifically, Azriel and Fearghus are my Cadets (and they are also
both members of the Black Tigers, along with Drache, which creates some
interesting familial relationships for me and Blayde)

Gulf Wars was a blast! Starting Monday, the revenge tourney was a big
success with Tiberius Addams overcoming earlier losses in the round
robin and sweeping the finals. Congrats Tiberius and great job goes out
to Azriel le Fey for putting it on. Once that was done her reward was 10
minutes of Black Scarf test as a reward.

As usual, I had a twist for this candidate and at about the 15 second
mark, I went after her relentlessly for about a minute or so. At one
point she uttered "you're so mean" and "I hate you." All in fun of
course. But, as expected, she came through with flying colors and is now
an official Black Scarfed member of the Academie cadre. Shortly
afterward, she too Fearghas Bucannon as a “Black Cord” candidate.
Welcome aboard brother!

On Tuesday, Uther and I (Uther is King of the West and Blayde is his
rapier champion - Max) entered the Diamond tourney which consisted of
one Heavy and one Rapier champion from each kingdom. Uther (being Uther)
made his fights look easy. I did as well until the semi's then struggled
a little, but redeemed myself, and we took home the victory for the West
and the Tigers.

The melee on Wednesday was fantastic. The combined forces of Tigers,
West fighters, our friends of the Mid and Gleann Abhann made quite an
impact. We faced Northshield the first two battles and took them out
quite well, but certainly not without a good fight. In the third battle,
we took heavy losses, but were reinforced by our friends from
Aethelmaerc (No clue how to spell that). Then Atlantia did their job on
the other side and we won the war point for Trimaris.

The ravine battle wasn't fun due to no side evening at first.
Eventually, King Uther made the decision to switch things up and a
target rich environment suddenly appeared. It was good fun.

On Thursday, Alexander Drache dominated the every man tourney giving him
half of his fourth rank. He now needs to successfully defeat three
people. Looks like me and Tora are gonna have to up our dagger budget.
Good job Drache! Oh, and I won my champions fight. Uther, apparently,
wrote quite a big check guarantee to the King of Trimaris, then gave me
quite the herald send off out on the field. All I can remember is him
mentioning a "flash" and the nickname might be sticking... I'm a little
worried. So, a few seconds into the fight, I saw an opening on the sword
arm and since I take my Zombieland training seriously, decided to go for
a double tap starting at the arm and ending in the chest. I guess I
surprised him. Whew!

The big news was the success of the Zen Warrior Ladies Championship -
Gulf Wars. We had 27 fighters and some very nice prizes donated by Zen
Warrior (Walter Triplett). He gave away a sword and a pair of nice
gloves. The Tigers donated a mask from Zen Warrior as well, and the
ladies were very excited about the nice prizes. This tourney is a
qualifier for what will be the Zen Warrior - Known World Ladies
Championship at Pennsic after another qualifier. Eight ladies have
qualified by participating in the tourney. When the fighting was over,
Azriel le Fey was our winner. I'm very proud of her. Letia from Atlantia
placed second and Arnaz from the West placed third.

Friday was the big "Ladies of the Rose" tourney hosted by Ansteorra. It
drew 150 fighters, even bigger than last year when Hawk won. Wow! Our
crew did not win it, but I was very proud of where they all finished.
After six rounds every one was still in with Azriel le Fey still clean.
In the end, she made the top 9. Fearghas Bucannon and Hawk made the top
six. Good job all. I was supposed to fight some byes but it didn't
happen. So, when the Trimaris tourney came up next, I jumped in. It was
an hour bear pit, so I dug in and won my first 20 fights, then after a
loss, my next nine. I sat down and it was enough to take it...
luckily... since those two runs wore me out.

The next tourney was the Midrealm tourney with an all you can eat format
for an hour. Hawk won it despite Tiberius going 11-0. It was a good
lesson about playing with your food.

Overall, I'm very happy with our melee experience. Thanks to Anton,
Sylvain and the crew from the Mists, our hosts Radu and Bri... it was a
great war. And, I'm really proud of our Tiger Academie fighters.... you
all rock!
